The Scotsman is sixth on the list of all-time appearances for the club with 490.
Sweeney arrived at Ashton Gate in 1971 from Morton and was a regular in the 1976 promotion-winning team.
He continued in the top flight with City and stuck with the club through their successive relegations from 1980.
In 1982 he was one of the eight players to rip a playing contract in order to save the club from bankruptcy - a group dubbed the Ashton Gate Eight.
Sweeney enjoyed spells with York City, Forest Green Rovers and Gloucester City before concluding his career in 1984.
He later went on to work for the Press Association at City matches.
