'The atmosphere was sensational' – Oxtoby

Bristol City Women’s manager Tanya Oxtoby has praised the support shown at Ashton Gate as a record crowd of 3,041 watched City Women’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League opener.

City Women and Brighton played out a goalless draw in BS3 and the Robins’ boss thanked all the fans for that came out to support her side this afternoon.

“The crowd were brilliant all day and got right behind the girls. The atmosphere was sensational, so we thank them for coming out and for their support – we really felt that, especially in the second half when we started to get some momentum.”

“We will take the point, from our perspective the first 45 was disappointing and we didn’t really execute what we asked, said Oxtoby.

“Credit to Brighton, they came out and did what we expected them to do and that’s the disappointing thing from our perspective, that we had planned for that and we didn’t really execute it.”

The Robins were able to earn a point in their season opener at Ashton Gate, thanks to a first half penalty save from Sophie Baggaley.

“It’s fantastic for Sophie, we know how hard she works week in week out and the level of detail the coaches go int with her before each game. She’s a class act, but now she needs to execute that week in week out.”

City Women now look ahead to next weekend, where they travel to Everton in hope of improving on today’s result.

“Next week, Everton – I think that we need to be better than we were today. From our perspective, we need to be better with the ball as we created a lot of our own problems today.

“Fingers crossed another week on the training track will get the girls gelling again as they looked a little disjointed today, which was to be expected with some of the late arrivals we had. Another week in and we will have a fluid performance.”
