Semenyo strike secures Blues win

Antoine Semenyo’s 46th-minute goal secured City Under-23s a victory over Birmingham City at Ashton Gate.

A minute after his introduction, Semenyo and Marcus Day combined and the front man’s Cruyff turn in the middle of the box gave him the space to fire a right-foot shot past David Stockdale.

The victory extended City’s unbeaten run to four games following the wins over Barnsley and Wigan Athletic and a draw with Leeds United.

The first-half ended goalless with few clear-cut chances for City save an early effort from the lively Day who intercepted a pass inside the Birmingham half but his shot was blocked by Tate Campbell.

Tyreeq Bakinson had a chance after a one-two with Kasey Palmer but his effort went wide after 37 minutes while at the other end Ryan Burke's shot was easily saved by Aaron Sainsbury.

Luke Williams made a triple substitution at halftime with Semenyo replacing Szmodics, James Edward Taylor taking over from Kasey Palmer and Ricardo Rees on for Ashley Williams.

City upped the tempo and Semenyo made an immediate impression when he linked with Day for the goal.

Sainsbury got down well to save from George but the Robins had the better of the second half to finish on top.

City’s next game will be away at Sheffield United at the Proact Stadium, Chesterfield on Monday, September 16th (7pm)

City Under-23s: Sainsbury, Williams (capt), Low, Baldwin, Day, Palmer (Taylor 45), Szmodics (Semenyo 45), Towler, Watkins, Bakinson, Adelakun. Subs (unused): Robertson, Britton.
