Report: Arsenal Women 4-0 Bristol City Women

Bristol City Women fall to a 4-0 defeat against a clinical Arsenal Women at Borehamwood on Thursday evening.

What happened?

Vivianne Miedema opened the scoring for the Gunners on the eleventh minute as she picked up the ball on the edge of the box and drove into the danger area before poking the ball into the far corner of the net.

City Women responded well and Ella Rutherford’s teasing crosses into the box just managed to evade her fellow teammates and were unable to trouble Peyraud-Magnin in the Arsenal goal.

Poppy Pattinson advanced into the Arsenal box and the full-back flashed a ball across the six-yard box, but it was just out of reach for Abi Harrison, who had gambled at the far post.

Van De Donk went close before the half was up as she was slid in behind the City Women defence, her effort beat Sophie Baggaley in the City Women goal but Gemma Evans was on hand to clear the ball off the line.

Bristol City Women started the half the brighter of the two sides. First, Ella Rutherford picked out Abi Harrison with a neat through-ball and the striker curled a left-footed effort on target which forced Peyraud-Magnin into a smart save.

Harrison then picked out fellow Scot, Lucy Graham with a searching ball but the midfielder couldn't steer her header on target. Ella Rutherford also tested Peyraud-Magnin with an effort from just outside the eighteen-yard box.

Arsenal hadn’t had a sniff all half, but when they did they took their opportunity. Miedema’s deft touch took her behind City Women line and she cooly finished to double her side’s lead.

McCabe managed to beat the offside trap and fire home to add a third and shortly after Miedema connected with Van De Donk’s cross to secure her hat-trick and wrap up the victory for the home side.
