‘Positive aspects to take moving forward’ - Oxtoby

Despite yesterday’s loss to Chelsea, Bristol City Women boss Tanya Oxtoby was pleased with elements of her side’s performance but believes momentary lapses in concentration cost her side.

Ebony Salmon netted the game’s opener in the sixteenth minute but a flurry of Chelsea goals prior to half-time saw City trail by three at the break with Chelsea going on to win 6-1 at Kingsmeadow.

“I thought we started really well and we frustrated them, but a side like Chelsea will always find a way. The manner in which we conceded before half-time is not acceptable and the players know that, said Oxtoby.

“Overall, given that we have had four players in training this week - due to injury and illness - the performance wasn’t too bad , but it’s the result that was disappointing for us because they created a fair few opportunities, but they were also gifted a few by us.

“In the second half we were still playing decent football at times and being a little bit comfortable under pressure, which is what we asked them to do, we asked them to brave so there are definitely positives within that performance.

“People only see the scoreline and at times we did hold our own but lapses in concentration cost us and we need to make sure we’re switched for ninety minutes.

“There were some decent performances all over the pitch considering a lot of them are struggling to get through ninety minutes with injury and that’s disappointing from our end because our hands are a little bit tied.

“We spoke at half-time about making sure we get our processes right and give ourselves a platform to go into next week with and at times we did that, so we’ve got take positives, regroup and build towards next weekend.”

Bristol City Women face Liverpool at the  SGS College Stoke Gifford Stadium on Sunday, January 19th (3pm).
