Oxtoby eyes Birmingham clash

City Women boss Tanya Oxtoby previews tomorrow’s huge Barclays FA Women’s Super League clash with Birmingham City (3pm).

Oxtoby has praised her squad’s reaction in training this week as they look to to bounce back to last weekend’s heavy defeat and pick up their first win of the season against a Birmingham outfit, who sit one point and one place above the Robins in the table.

“No one goes out out to put in a performance like that, when you’re playing in the best league in the world and you have a bad day at the office, you get punished for it, said Oxtoby.

“It’s an opportunity for us this weekend to go out and rectify that performance and look to build some momentum going into these last three games before Christmas.

“The response in training and the reaction to that performance, we couldn’t ask for more which is what we were looking for as staff and as playing group. They’re working really hard in training and they’re really looking forward to the game as it gives the players chance to right a few wrongs.

“It’s a massive game this weekend and it’s one that we have earmarked at the start of the season, from our perspective it is one that we can be competitive in and one we can get points from.

“It’s about getting back to being difficult to beat, making sure that we are defensively structured and sound, to be Bristol City and get back to what we’re trying to achieve.

“There are still fourteen games to go and forty-two points up for grabs. You’ve got to put things like these into context, we had such a tough November against such quality teams that resources far outweigh ours and that’s not excuse for our performance last week but it gives some context and like I said we’re focused now on Sunday.

“We’re not panicking, we’re a young side and we’re looking to build and we’ll look to strengthen in the January window. From our perspective there are some really winnable games coming up before and after Christmas and we’re just looking for that first win that has evaded is so far.”

Bristol City Women take on Birmingham City on Sunday, December 8th (3pm) at the SGS College Stoke Gifford Stadium and supporters can purchase their tickets in advance at a discounted rate.
