‘Great team performance' - Wellings

Charlie Wellings was pleased with the character and fight displayed by City Women as they came from behind to secure a hard-fought point at Reading’s Madejski Stadium.

The Royals raced into a two-goal lead but Wellings halved the deficit before the break with a sweetly struck strike. However, the hosts regained their two-goal advantage early into the second half through Angharad James before Yana Daniels and Ebony Salmon completed a dramatic comeback for the Robins.

Although disappointed to concede three goals, Wellings was quick to praise the team’s character, fight and never-say-die attitude as they battled out a 3-3 draw.

“I think it was a great team performance - we dug it out,” she explained.

“We were trailing early through the two goals we conceded and it’s always tough to come back from that, but it shows the character in the team and the fight to want to get points – I think we did a great job.

“The counter attacks were massive for us. On the whole we defended really, really well and we hit them on the counter as quick as we could which is one of our strengths, so we definitely used it to our advantage."

Recalling her second goal of the campaign, the summer recruit said: “I just saw a channel and I knew Carla (Humphrey) could deliver it in there.

“I was looking at her straight in the eyes, she looked straight back at me and that’s when I knew it was coming in. The ball bounced awkwardly so I thought it had messed up but luckily it fell nicely and I placed it into the bottom corner.

“That’s a starting point for us now, we don’t want our standards to drop any lower than that. It’s tough to come away and concede three goals but to get a point from that position is massive.

“If we can keep clean sheets and keep the goals coming then hopefully we can get a few more wins on the board.”

Next up for Tanya Oxtoby’s side is a trip to Arsenal on Thursday evening in the FA Continental Cup (November 21st, 7.45pm), before they host Manchester City on Sunday at SGS Arena (November 24th, 12.30pm).
