Who Is Responsible?
The guidelines below are in place to allow all players at our Academy to feel safe, be protected from harm and have their welfare at the heart of what we do:
All staff have responsibilities to:
- Provide a safe environment in which children can learn
- Identify children who may be in need of support
- Know what to do if a child tells them they are being abused
- Be aware of the different types of abuse
- Be aware of different safeguarding issues
- Be aware of the signs of radicalisation and know what to do
What are the club’s responsibilities in relation to safer recruitment?
- Carry out checks ahead of appointing members of staff. ID checks include: 'DBS' (to the required level relevant to the role being performed), 'Barred List', 'Right to Work in the UK', verify any professional qualifications, previous employment history and references
- A Single Central Record (SCR) of all staff containing the above information is maintained

Where do I go to find safeguarding information?
- On the BCFC Academy website or in the Academy office
What is covered in the safeguarding training?
All staff attend an FA safeguarding course at least once every three years. This training covers:
- Specific safeguarding issues in football– Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE)
- Noticing possible indicators of abuse – sexual, physical, emotional abuse and neglect
- Dealing with disclosures and how to respond and report– TED (Tell, Explain, Describe)
- Professional boundaries
- Use of social media and mobile phones
What do I do if I have a safeguarding concern?
- Remain calm and take what the learner says seriously
- Don’t express judgement
- Listen carefully without interrupting or prompting
- Reassure them that they are not to blame
- Do not ask leading questions
- Let them know what you are going to do to help
- Don’t promise confidentiality
- Complete the safeguarding referral form and report what you have been told to a member of the Safeguarding/Welfare team (in person within 2 hours)
- The Safeguarding Officer will then review the concern and make a decision. This could include: Speaking with the player (possibly with the staff member), monitoring the situation and provide on-going support; contacting parents (if this doesn’t put the child at risk of more harm), seeking advice or making a referral to Social Services or the Police
What do I do if I have a visitor coming on site?
- All staff should book visitors in. They should sign-in at the Academy office and collect a red visitor lanyard
